This website includes information about the PCE Plume Superfund Site located in Salt Lake City, UT. In it you will find information about the discovery of the plume, how the CERCLA/Superfund program works, and opportunities for public involvement.
Background
Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) contamination was first detected at the Site in the 1990s during routine sampling of a private irrigation well. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Utah Department of Environmental Quality (UDEQ) conducted several assessments but did not determine the source of the contamination. Site Location
The site is located in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. It is west of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) and is generally centered near the intersection of 700 South and 1600 East, in the eastern portion of Salt Lake City. Site Progress
The CERCLA/SUPERFUND response process is defined by a series of steps or phases as illustrated above. Currently, the Site is in the Remedial Investigation / Feasibility Study (RI/FS) phase.
The RI/FS is a process focusing on defining the nature and extent of contamination, assessing risk to human health and the environment, and developing a cleanup strategy to eliminate potentially harmful human health and environmental impacts.

A: Sites listed on Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund, National Priorities List (NPL) are the nation’s highest priority for hazardous waste cleanup. Living, working, or going to school near a superfund site may have negative health effects however, living near a Superfund site does not necessarily mean that residential property is contaminated.
